Depressive symptoms

Depression and anxiety are the most common mental health problems in the UK. Depressive symptoms can range from mild to severe and can be prolonged.

Scientists will tell you that depressive symptoms such as low mood, lack of energy and sleep problems can be linked to low levels of a chemical in the brain called serotonin. This neurochemical is manufactured in the brain and intestines and is thought to be responsible for maintaining a balanced mood. This is why too much or too little of serotonin can affect the way we feel and make us susceptible to mood changes. There is a growing recognition amongst scientists that, whilst medications are important in relieving depressive symptoms for some people, psychological factors like positive mental health, happiness and well-being are vital factors in  preventing depressive symptoms.
