Post-traumatic stress

If you are experiencing post-traumatic stress you will be familiar with the description of the fight-or-flight response. At some point a life-threatening event will have triggered a powerful stress reaction. It is natural after such an event to experience upsetting memories, have trouble sleeping and concentrating. If these symptoms persist for months or even years after the event you may be diagnosed as suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

According to the National Centre for PTSD in the USA there are four types of symptoms commonly experienced by PTSD sufferers. These are: ‘flashbacks’ or re-living the event; avoiding people or places that remind you of the event; experiencing negative feelings such as guilt or lack of enjoyment; a sense of being on hyper-alert which can affect your sleep and concentration.
